Since becoming involved with the Ava Gardner Museum in 2019, first as a volunteer providing social media strategy, content development, and digital marketing assistance and later as a member of the board of directors, I’ve had the opportunity to contribute original articles to the organization’s blog. Although he passed away in 1976, his prolific body of work and lasting impact cannot be overstated.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the 1939 cinematic classic The Wizard of Oz. While there is hardly a person who has missed seeing the film since its original release, fewer people today are as familiar with the movie’s original source material, the groundbreaking children’s book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The book has had countless sequels and assorted adaptations since first being published in 1900. But, it is the original story by L. Frank Baum and the innovative illustrations by W. W. Denslow that turned the book into an instant success. The unique work of Denslow served as the visual framework for the film and as an inspiration to subsequent generations of illustrators and designers.
