For most people, August means the inevitable end of summer – a time to squeeze in one last vacation or to start getting the kids ready for school. For fans of Turner Classic Movies, August means the annual Summer Under the Stars festival – a time to binge watch 31 days of masterfully curated programming on our favorite channel.
The month-long festival features 24-hour tributes to a wide range of stars, equally representing those known for leading parts as well as character roles. The 2016 festival schedule was no exception. It included actresses and actors who worked in films of every genre imaginable – from drama and westerns to musicals and comedy. While icons like Humphrey Bogart and Bette Davis were returning to the festival lineup, stars like Brigitte Bardot, Tim Holt, and Boris Karloff were among a total of 19 performers appearing for the first time.
For this year’s event, I wanted to do more than just watch the movies of this varied lineup of stars. I wanted to explore the cinematic impact and contributions of these legends using my craft as a designer. As a result, I created a series of 31 digital flash cards that I shared with the TCM online community during the festival. My designs included facts and career milestones for each star of the day as well as one notable quotation. I also incorporated an original GIF into each illustration which highlighted a moment from one of the star’s films airing that day.
In case you missed any of my posts on Twitter, you can see the entire series in the gallery below.
It was a pleasure to contribute these designs to the daily online discussions of Summer Under the Stars. To TCM and the #TCMParty community, I would like to say a huge "thank you" for all of the likes and retweets. Your continued support of my work is tremendous and greatly appreciated!
